San Francisco: Fog, Flavor, and Favorite Finds

Why San Francisco Keeps Calling Me Back
San Francisco is one of those cities that always pulls me back in. Every visit reminds me why it remains one of my favorite places to travel in the U.S. I’ve been lucky enough to visit multiple times over the years, and with each trip, I find myself returning to my favorite spots while still discovering something new. From iconic landmarks to unforgettable food and easy escapes into nature, San Francisco truly has it all.

Fisherman’s Wharf: A Tourist Classic Worth Visiting
I almost always find myself at Fisherman’s Wharf when I’m in San Francisco. Yes, it’s touristy—but it’s also such a fun and iconic part of the city. Being right on the water, walking along the piers, and seeing the fishing boats lined up along the docks makes it feel uniquely San Francisco. One of my must-do stops here is Boudin, hands down the best place for clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. They bake the bread fresh every day, and you can actually watch it being made through the windows, which somehow makes it taste even better.

Ghirardelli Square & Waterfront Views
Just a short walk from the Wharf is Ghirardelli Square, one of my favorite places to slow down. Whether it’s an ice cream on a sunny day or a rich hot chocolate when the fog rolls in, this is the perfect spot for a treat and some people-watching. Nearby, there’s a lovely park with amazing views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, making it a great place to sit, relax, and take in the scenery.

The Painted Ladies: San Francisco’s Most Photogenic Homes
No San Francisco visit is complete without seeing the iconic Painted Ladies, often lovingly referred to as the Pink Ladies. These colorful Victorian homes, with the city skyline behind them, are one of the most photographed spots in the city—and for good reason. I love grabbing a spot across the street at Alamo Square Park, taking in the views, and watching locals enjoy the green space. It’s a great place to pause, snap some photos, and soak up that classic San Francisco charm.

Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio & a Touch of Disney Magic
Spending time near the Golden Gate Bridge never gets old. The Presidio is absolutely beautiful, with trails that bring you right up close to the bridge and offer sweeping views of the water. It’s one of my favorite areas to explore on foot. I also love stopping by the Walt Disney Family Museum, especially on a foggy or rainy day. Learning about Walt Disney’s life, creativity, and journey is both fascinating and inspiring.

Golden Gate Park: Gardens, Art & a Peaceful Escape
Another must-visit area is Golden Gate Park, which feels like a world of its own right in the middle of the city. One of my favorite spots inside the park is the Japanese Tea Garden—it’s so peaceful and beautifully maintained, making it the perfect place to slow down and reset. I also love visiting the art museums in the park, especially the de Young Museum, which offers both incredible exhibits and great views from its observation tower. It’s an ideal mix of culture, nature, and relaxation.

Muir Woods & Mill Valley: A Nature Escape Just Outside the City
When I need a break from the city energy, Muir Woods is my go-to escape. Walking among the towering sequoia trees is one of my favorite nature experiences—they’re peaceful, grounding, and a perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of San Francisco. After hiking, I love heading over to nearby Mill Valley for its charming small-town feel. I usually stop at Mill Valley Market for homemade sandwiches, which make the perfect picnic before heading back into the city.

Chinese Food & Exploring Chinatown
San Francisco has, in my opinion, the best Chinatown in the U.S. Walking through the lantern-lined streets, browsing local shops, and taking in the energy of the neighborhood is an experience all on its own. When it comes to food, two of my favorites are Fang and House of Nanking. The mapo tofu at House of Nanking is the best I’ve had since my time in China, and both restaurants offer incredible specialties you won’t find anywhere else.

Pizza Perfection at Tony’s in Little Italy
Located in the heart of Little Italy (North Beach)Tony’s Pizza Napoletana is a must for pizza lovers. Tony’s is known for using a variety of ovens to create different styles of pizza, so everyone can get exactly the kind they love. It’s a lively, casual spot and always worth the stop.

A Trip to “The Rock”: Visiting Alcatraz
Visiting Alcatraz is an unforgettable experience. The ferry ride over is short but scenic, and exploring the island and museum gives you a fascinating look into the prison’s history. Plus, the views of the San Francisco skyline from the island are incredible and offer a totally different perspective of the city.

A Hidden Urban Escape: Salesforce Park
One of my favorite hidden gems is Salesforce Park, an elevated park built on top of the Salesforce Transit Center near the Salesforce Tower. It’s such a peaceful escape in the middle of downtown, with walking paths, greenery, and great city views. It’s the perfect place to recharge between sightseeing stops.

Napa Valley: The Perfect Bay Area Day Trip
If you have an extra day, Napa Valley makes an amazing day trip from San Francisco. With so many wineries to explore, it’s easy to find something that fits your taste and travel style. It’s a relaxing, scenic contrast to the city and a perfect way to round out a Bay Area trip.

San Francisco is a city I never get tired of. Between the food, iconic sights, cultural stops, and peaceful escapes, there’s always something new to discover. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, the City by the Bay has a way of leaving you inspired—and already planning your next return. Journey on and happy travels! 🌉✨
