Exploring Victoria Falls in Zambia: A Bucket-List Experience

Victoria Falls is one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders, and visiting it is a must-do for any traveler to Africa. During our trip to Zambia, we were able to experience the falls from the Zambian side due to border crossing restrictions during COVID, but I’ve heard that the Zimbabwe side offers equally stunning views. Whether you’re there for the breathtaking waterfall, the Zambezi River, or the adventurous activities, this destination is nothing short of spectacular.

Stay at Thorntree Lodge: A Luxurious Escape on the Zambezi River

If you’re heading to Victoria Falls, I can’t recommend Thorntree Lodge enough. Located right on the Zambezi River, this luxury lodge offers the perfect escape with its serene atmosphere and top-notch service. The accommodations are both clean and luxurious, featuring waterfall showers, private plunge pools right by the river, and fully stocked mini bars with local treats—Mosi, the local lager, being a particular favorite of mine. The staff is incredibly friendly and eager to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

One of the highlights of our stay was a surprise bush breakfast on our last day. We also enjoyed sunrise and sunset river cruises, where the colors in the sky were absolutely breathtaking. I even caught my first fish ever on a fishing trip (a tiger fish, no less!). The safari guides are amazing and very knowledgeable, taking you to nearby areas to explore the local culture. And let’s not forget the meals—each dish was made from freshly sourced ingredients, and dining with views of the river made the experience even more special. One unforgettable evening, the staff hosted a grill-out where we enjoyed delicious meats and vegetables with other guests. It was a great way to connect with people and share stories, especially during COVID when you’re often limited to your “quarantine bubble.”

Victoria Falls: The Heart of the Adventure

Of course, no trip to the area is complete without visiting Victoria Falls itself. From the Zambian side, you’ll have access to a bridge with incredible views of the falls. But be prepared to get wet—the mist can drench you, so definitely bring a rain jacket! After taking in the views, you can explore the nearby craft bazaar, where vendors sell a variety of items, from trinkets to beautiful wood carvings and paintings. Make sure you have cash, as bargaining is part of the fun, and bringing small trade items like pens or hair ties can be a great way to get better deals while supporting the local community.

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Victoria Falls offers thrilling activities like Angel’s Pool or Devil’s Pool, depending on the season. These pools sit right on the edge of the falls, allowing you to swim or walk out from Livingstone Island to the very brink of the waterfall. It was the most exhilarating experience I’ve ever had, and while it’s a bit terrifying, the guides are incredibly experienced and make sure you’re safe while capturing unforgettable photos of the adventure.

Cultural Immersion and Local Experiences

Beyond the falls, Livingstone has a lot to offer in terms of culture and local experiences. We visited the Livingstone Local Market with our guide, where we were able to explore the food stalls and buy some local sardines. We brought them back to Thorntree Lodge, where the chefs cooked them for us—a great way to taste a truly local dish.

Another highlight was visiting the Livingstone Museum, which offers insight into the city’s history, including its colonial past. Although the exhibits are a bit old-fashioned, it’s fascinating to learn about the city’s evolution. Don’t miss the Livingstone Jewish and Railroad Museum, which highlights the important role the Jewish community played in the city’s development and how Livingstone had a large impact in the railroad industry.

Safari and Wildlife Adventures

While the safari experience in southern Zambia is not as rich as in other regions like Uganda, the wildlife is still impressive. During our time in the area, we spotted elephants, giraffes, and rhinos (which are heavily protected due to their low numbers). The real highlight, however, was the opportunity to observe hippos and crocodiles in the Zambezi River. If you’re a fan of river safaris and boat rides, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

In conclusion, a trip to Victoria Falls in Zambia is a truly unforgettable experience. From the awe-inspiring falls to the luxurious accommodations at Thorntree Lodge and the chance to immerse yourself in the local culture, there’s so much to discover. Whether you’re here for the natural beauty, the thrill of the falls, or the peaceful river surroundings, this destination has something for everyone.
